Reed Diffusers - The perfect addition or alternative to scented candles.

The Reed Diffuser has been staple in our homes for yearsnow. Their contemporary look and smokeless delivery of scents have made them apopular alternative to the scented candle. But how much do you really knowabout the Reed Diffuser and its benefits, in this week’s blog, I will tell you.

First off, let us be clear on what Reed Diffusers are andwhat their purpose is. Reed diffusersare used to radiate scents through a room, using formulated oil which is pouredinto a base dish of the diffuser. Porous rattan reeds are popped into the oil, wherethe reed will draw the scent up to its tip and through evaporation allow thescent to permeate out of its pores. Valentine’s Day. The corporations way of expressing ourlove, adoration and lustfulness, has reared its ugly head once again.

January Blues

Like it or not, January is here in earnest. Statistically the most depressing and gloomy month of the year, we are more likely to break our hastily made resolutions than crack a smile. We have the dreaded wait for the post to arrive, laden with the heavier-than-normal credit card statements, kids returning to school and the knowledge that for our smug friends living in the Southern hemisphere January is their warmest month of the year. You start to get my drift. January, in the UK, is hard going.

Statistics will tell us that during January we will join a gym and undertake a regime of healthy living, the same stats also tell us that by the 15th Jan, we will have thrown in the towel and headed back to the biscuit tin. We are also told that we will clean our houses more this month, review our spending habits and take up a new hobby or activity. So, how do you get yourself through these turbulent few weeks, whilst holding it together for the rest of the family?

Put down the celebrity fitness dvd, push aside the Aloe Vera detox juice and read on.

The Perfect Christmas Table...

We all want to enjoy our Christmas meal and making the tablea welcoming place for guests to linger is just as important as the food. Well,daunting as it seems, arranging the perfect Christmas table couldn't be easier.

Creating a table with the wow factor sets the tone for theentire Christmas dinner. Also laying the table for Christmas dinner can be asmuch fun as decorating the tree.

Firstly think about colour, do you want to go traditionalwith reds and greens or add a bit of glamour with silver or gold. Touches of black, purple and orange can add abit of depth and spice too.

Your tabledecorations don't have to be fancy or elaborate. And you certainly don't haveto spend a fortune. Table runners are awonderful place to start. They addcolour to plain tables or table cloths, I especially like glitter or sequin styles.

Next think about napkins, Christmas crackers and placenames. Continue your colour theme makingsure they all complement each other visually. You can even add little silver or gold scatter stars for more glitter.

St Andrew’s Day

Now that Halloween is out the way most eyes begin to turn toChristmas, but we’ve one more celebration to go before then, well some of usdo! St Andrew’s Day is the 30^th of November but you could beforgiven for not knowing that as it hasn’t traditionally been a bigcelebration, however in recent years that’s been changing and increasingly weare seeing more and more people choosing to mark the day in some way.

Although our products go around the world these days and wehave always strived to find inspiration for our candles from the four cornersof the globe our base is in Glasgow and a number of our collections have adistinctive Scottish theme.

Our Highland Collection candles were inspired by RobertBurns, the Red, Red Rose Collection by his beautiful song of the same name andthe Ae Fond Kiss by another of his most famous love songs. Both thesecollections were created with gifts in mind and they come with wonderful packagingwhich is almost as attractive as the candle it holds. As you might expect Red,Red Rose has a distinctly red feel to it using a red and gold tartan checkpattern to bring a burst of colour to a winter’s day. We’ve a pillar candle, achalice candle and a whisky goblet candle each of which has the wonderful aromaof rose petals. The chalice candle also has the words of this most beautiful ofsongs etched onto the glass, it really is lovely candle.

The Ae Fond Kiss collection is larger and contains a pillarcandle, three different whisky goblet candles, a chalice candle and an unusualand distinctly Scottish Quaich Cup of Friendship candle. Ae Fond Kiss packagingis equally impressive using a purple and lilac tartan check pattern. The threewhisky goblet candles all have their own special scent, a highland heather andScottish honey which is shared by the pillar and chalice candles too, the scentof the Marsh Orchid a wonderfully rare Scottish flower only found in theHebrides and finally one that has the aroma of Cranachan a traditional Scottishdessert which in recent years has been reinvented by some of the finestrestaurants in the country. A succulent combination of red berries, mint andtoasted oatmeal it’s a truly warming aroma.

Around this time of year our thoughts begin to turn towardsChristmas and whilst many of us will still have a lot of present buying to donow is also a good time to consider what your dining table is going to looklike, not only on the big day itself but also for any other get-togethers you mighthave planned.

For most of us the option for changing our dining tables islimited so we rely on an imaginative use of colour through place mats, napkinsand, of course, candles. Dining candles are great because they are available ina really wide range of colours and the tall slim design of a traditional diningcandle is a universal fit for most candle holders.

When combined with matching napkins and serving dishes, orindeed contrasting ones, or to add just a splash of colour to a neutral palettedining candles bring that touch of formality and sense of occasion that allgreat dinner parties need.

Think about the mood you are trying to create, forexample Christmas looks great with golden candles and you can rarely go wrongwith red dining candles at the Christmas dinner table either. Away from the dayitself you might be planning something less formal and want to go for abrighter more informal colour like jade or deep pink, alternatively thetraditional favourites of ivory and white will never go out of fashion and canbe matched with any room.

As the name suggests pillar candles are so called because of their shape and size. Large, often 5 to 8 inchestall by 2 to 3 inches across, pillar candles were one of the earliest design ofcandle; and like all design classics they are timeless.

They have a number of attributes that have led to theirlongevity. For a start they are slow burning making them extremely good value.For example we have a pillar candlewhich will burn for an average of 120 hours, yes that means if you lit it onMonday morning it would still be burning on Friday night! Even the smaller oneswill burn for over 50 hours.

Aside from the practical attraction there is the aestheticattraction; they do look good. Strong and broad they can dominate a tablesetting, add colour to any room and are great accessories when you want todress a room up for an evening or celebration. It no longer surprises us whencustomers tell us they have bought a pillar candle with no intention of everlighting it, they simply use it as a timeless and affordable ornamentaldecoration. We introduced the Highland Pillar candle which combines patterned exterior packaging with the traditional candle shapefor this very reason.

Another popular variety are Soy Wax candles.Made from sustainable sources soy wax candles are increasingly popular, theylook nice too, the ivory colour has a very natural feel to it.

Modernity has brought one useful addition to pillar candles;fragrance. Meaning that they not only look good and last a long time but theysmell wonderful too.

Halloween Parties - 10 Top Tips!

Creating a spooky scene for your Halloween partydoesn't have to be a nightmare. Shearer Candles gives you ten horrifying hints forthe ultimate ghoulish gathering!

Pick your date – The 31st of October might be obvious, but if it is a week night you might want to move it to the weekend, or maybe just choose a day that doesn’t clash with someone else’s party!

Send out you invites in plenty of time. Design your own frightening invitations online or buy from your local card shop. Remember to let your guests know it is a fancy dress party especially if you have picked a theme.

Plan your Halloween canapés well in advance. Try marinated mozzarella eyeballs with olive irises, devilled chicken wings, ghost and bat shaped cookies, mini toffee apples and wicked witch cup cakes.

Cocktails are a must at a Halloween party. Serve your guests bleeding heart martinis, bloody rum punch, witches brew or poison apple punch. Don’t forget to add spooky shaped ice cubes to your drinks!

Give the room an eerie glow with green light bulbs, place carved pumpkins with tea lights around the room, light orange, purple and black dining candles and line your patio with lanterns, outdoor candles to create a truly chilling atmosphere.

Decorate the room with scary stuff. Try faux spider’s webs, ghostly window stickers, hang bat and ghost cut-outs from the ceiling, even make your own tomb stones out of cardboard. And don’t forget a Halloween party is not complete without a few skeletons!

Autumn; A Time to Celebrate Colour

Whilst few of us actually celebrate the moving of summerinto autumn most of us at least embrace the changing season and the beauty andcolour that it brings, and beautiful it is of that there is little argument.Like all fashions autumn colours are subject to the whims and vagaries offashion houses and magazine editors but generally speaking a number of corecolours remain each year.

Autumn is a rich and vibrant season, bolder than both springand summer but much warmer than winter. Gold, orange, red and purple are allvery autumnal, even black has a place at the table particularly aroundHalloween. Obviously shades of these colour matter enormously too. The orangesshould be burnt or terracotta, the reds dark or maroon and the purples deep.

Few of us can afford to redecorate our homes four times ayear so most of us accessorise, and that’s where candles become invaluable. Bysimply adding a couple of autumnal coloured candles like this Orange and Cinnamon Pillar Candleor this Red Hollyberry and Clove Hurricane Lamp onto a table a room begins to take on a whole new feel. Tealights are anothergreat accessory, although small they are eyecatching and are a really easy wayto introduce new colour to a room. So whilst our summer clothes are being put tothe back of the wardrobe with a sigh lets embrace the darker evenings and theglorious rich colours that allows us to add to our homes again.

Paris Success

We had a wonderfully successful show in Paris. We took some big orders, met some fabulous people and of course were inspired by all the decor and style that The Maison et Objet gift fair has to offer.

Our big excitement at the Fair was the Launch of Amber Noir - our new fragrance collection of black and gold candles. It was such a success with many orders for the range. Everyone loved the glamour, the decadence and aroma that Amber Noir creates.

Again the Paris show lived up to its reputation as the most stylish event in the interiors, gifting and fragrance calender.

Opulence on a grand scale, decor decadence for Christmas and rich purple shot with bolts of Gold .

Crimson velvets studded with multi coloured tourmaline crystals, large white flamboyant Xmas trees sparkling with silver feathers and oversized opal baubles and old fashioned Victorian baths filled with foaming cotton wool doused in fragrance with pearls sprinkled on the top.

The Italians where showing high gloss candle finishes in black and red.

The French stayed very traditionally chic in understated silver and grays with flashes of cerise and magenta.

Holland & Belgium lifestyle houses where going for the Vintage look in furniture, cushions and accessories with their fabulous silk floral arrangements.

Some recent, exciting research that has come to light (pardon the pun). Please read our Press Release which has featured in many newspapers, local and national over the past week.

Diamonds in Candles...

*** The UK’s leading manufacturer of lifestyle candles, Shearer Candles has welcomed recent academic research that proves candles really do add sparkle to a room – as their flame contains diamonds.

Scientists at St Andrews University have discovered tiny particles of the gem exist in candle flames, with around 1.5million diamond nanoparticles created every second that a candle flame burns.

Professor Wuzong Zhou, Professor of Chemistry uncovered the secret ingredient after a challenge from a fellow scientist in combustion.

Using a new sampling technique, Dr Zhou was able to remove particles from the centre of the flame, something never successfully achieved before – and found that it contained all known forms of carbon.

The discovery of diamond particles in a flame could lead to future research into how diamonds could be created more cheaply and in a more environmentally friendly way.

Rosey Barnet, Artistic Director of Shearer Candles, described the results as “exciting”.

She said: “We were thrilled to hear about the discovery that diamond particles exist in a candle flame. Although currently there is no way of extracting these particles, it is still an exciting find and one that could change the way people view candles.

“The research at St Andrews University will be of interest to the entire candle making industry. We always knew candles added sparkle to a room but now scientific research has provided us with more insight into why.”

Shearer Candles, the UK’s leading manufacturer of lifestyle candles were informed by the University of the findings, and has offered the scientists full use of their factory if needed for future experiments.

The company which was founded in Glasgow in 1897, has developed from a small company producing church candles into a business that makes millions of lifestyle candles every year. Each of the two production lines at its factory in Glasgow has the capability to produce six tonnes of candles every 24 hours, which are then shipped to major British supermarkets and department stores, as well as to destinations around Europe, America and Japan.

Shearer Candles exports to Europe have increased by a massive 267% following their involvement in three exhibitions in Paris over the past 12 months. Shearer Candles can now be purchased in Poland, Sweden, Finland and Norway as well as France, Germany, Japan and Greece.

I recently took part in a webinar hosted by Kline Market Research. The topic being, 'A clean and fragrant home boosts the US market' Part of the webinar touched on Home Fragrance Trends which is what im going to blog about.

Kline exposed some really interesting facts, figures and trends for the current and future home fragrance market. Although the US market is different from the UK and European markets, it leads and influences both. Yankee candles, S.C. Johnson and Bath and Bodyworks are market leaders in home fragrance; these companies dominate the worldwide fragrance markets so such research is valuable to Shearer Candles and its customers.

Home Fragrance Product Categories Researched:

Candles - wax, scented only, pillars, tealights, votives and contained
Diffusers - gelatin, oil, electric, battery, reed diffusers, gels, beads
Room Sprays - pump, aerosol
Home Fragrance Oils - oils, simmerings, lamps etc

From 2009 - 2010 there has been a 1% increase in sales of home fragrance products at manufacturing level. 2010 sales stood at $3373m.

Interestingly enough the Home fragrance market has not been so effected by recession because consumers class products as simple pleasures in difficult times.

Mass market outlets have seen strong sales in diffusers and room sprays.

Candles

Candles account for 40% of the home fragrance market.

The candle market has reached maturity. It sees slow and steady growth but still has the largest proportion of the home fragrance market.

Candles have faced stiff competition from instant fragrancing i.e. oils, room sprays and diffusers.

There has been a noticeable narrowing gap between mass and premium candle brand sales. This could be to do with the mass market offering of home fragrance products being very close to those in speciality stores.

Reasons for the mature steady growth of the candle market at 1% since 2005.

Woodwick – A large competitor in the fragrance market have seen a decline – they had trouble with the licensing of their famous wood wick from Proctor and Gamble.

Gift Stores – decline due to recession and their weak sales performance.

Mass Merchandisers and speciality stores gain sales – Yankee Candles in all Target stores.

Candle prices remain stable

Successful products - scent ribbons, Air Wick in the premium positioned lines.

These reasons show successes and failures in the market which in turn have kept sales at a steady rate. In 2008 there was a huge boom in the home fragrance market - this can be blamed on innovation and new brands/ products.

Scent and home decor are very important to customers, they add value which is a critical factor for purchase.

The diffuser market has seen a 4.2% Growth from 2005-10, although the previous two years have seen a decline its on the up again.

S.C. Johnnson is the market leader in diffusers. Proctor and Gamble, Henkle and Reckitt Benckiser tie in second place.

New products in diffusers – scent crystals, beads, Scentbug, spill proof diffusers, illuminators, touch and movement technology.

There is alot of scope for product innovation in this category.

Wimbledon Fever!

I love Tennis. I cant play it, im more of a badminton girl but I love watching Wimbledon, especially Andy Murray. Im in emotional turmoil everytime I watch him play - an unpredicable player but I think he is getting better and better every year! Im a loyal fan.

I watched his first game last night - an unsteady start he then turned the game around and whipped his opponent - the crowd went crazy! I thought id get into the Wimbledon spirit and lit a Shearer Candles Strawberry Scented Candle while watching the game.

Shearer Candles are off to Venice

Today our Managing Director and Artistic Director - Rosey and Ian Barnet fly to Venice for The European Candle Makers Federation Gala Weekend.

This event runs every year and is hosted by a different Europen Country. Past cities include, Marseille, Florance and Hamburg. A Candle Maker in that City will host the event and organise wonderful trips, dinners and conferences for the weekend.

Topics to be debated this year at the event are Candle emission test methodology - possible regulatory scenarios and Industry position on indoor air quality. Such discussions enlighten candle makers to external and environmental issues in the global market and help them make firm descisions and solutions on the many problems that they face.

Venice will also be an opportunity to socialise with competitors, get all the candle gossip and chat about future trends in home fragrance, wax, machinery and many more candle related topics.

Rosey is hoping to come back to work feeling refreshed and full of ideas for the coming seasons. It is always a great 'ideas' trip for her and chatting with the other product developers from different European candle manufacturers gives her great insight to the future of the market.

How to Create the Perfect Candle Light Dinner Party with Shearer Candles.

It may seem surprising, but one of the most overlooked elements of a dinner party, is one of the most important. The hidden secret to the success of a dinner party is not only the food, the wine, the guests or the anecdotes, it’s a combination of them all, it’s the atmosphere.

Creating atmosphere is more than starting the story about mischievous times at university and reminiscing the feelings of being younger, and the irony that only “older” people have and host dinner parties; its more about the feeling that your guests will get when entering your home. Whether that is by having a slow cooked chicken wafting its way from the kitchen, or a peat fire in the winter, or even some sort of soft music playing in the background, these elements combine to make the most impressive atmosphere that comforts your guests when they enter the house. However, the most important one, the one that sets the scene, is the lighting, and within that, the candle light.

Candles are the objects that combine all the elements of atmosphere together and instantly relax your guests. Whether it be dining candles for the table or scented candles to mask the smell of the burnt potatoes we often underestimate their importance in creating the unforgettable atmosphere. Here I will give you tips on the top 5 candles to help create that magical ambience.

1. The Welcome Candle

This candle should be your brightest, warmest one. It should be the boldest and largest. Usually placed in a lantern hanging by your front door, it should indicate that your guests will be welcomed and should give your guests an indication of what to expect when they enter your home.

2. The Entrance Candle

With your entrance candle you should decide on a candle that is pleasant, warming and seasonal. If it is burning slowly in your reception room or hallway, it will give your home a pleasant aroma and mask any unwanted smells coming from the kitchen. Dependant on season you could opt for a spice scented candle for winter, or a vanilla and coconut for summer, or even a fruit orange and cinnamon or mango and starfruit. Consider the aroma’s created by your cooking and try and compliment them with the smell of your candles.

3. The Dining Candles

When dinner is served, the table should be dressed properly, and no table is complete without large, prominent candles lighting the room. These are to light the room, so when choosing look for the larger, slower burning ones that do not drip. Church candles are great for this, as are Sherwood candles, which will fit with ease into your candelabra.

4. The Centre Piece

This is the most important candle of the evening. Sitting in the middle of the table, it should be smoke and drip free, and should be a focal point, as well as providing more light around the table. Be it seasonal, homemade or a combination of various candles it should be prominent enough to be seen, yet discreet enough not to get in the way.

5. The After Dinner

Once your guests have been fed and watered, and as the evening draws to a close, you should consider the candle light for the after dinner drinks.

For the first time, The Candle Store, Shearer Candles onsite factory shop is exhibiting at the Country Living Christmas Fair in Scotland.

The Country Living Magazine Christmas Fairs have become a must-attend event for readers of the magazine and many more thousands of visitors looking for the very best in British country crafts, interiors, fashion and food. This will be the third year that Country Living has come to Scotland for Christmas.

This year the Fair is set to be bigger with even more exhibitors to visit. You can look forward to a real shopping delight with more than 260 exhibitors including lots of new faces coming to the show for the first time.

It's the perfect place to do all your Christmas shopping under one roof and enjoy a great day out with friends and family.

This is a Consumer Only Fair dedicated to Christmas Shoppers. Consumers can buy on the day.
